On its official Facebook page, the Portuguese Football Federation announced the passing of Diogo Jota:
“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are deeply saddened by the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who died early this morning in Spain.
Diogo Jota was not only a talented player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person, admired by all his teammates and opponents. He brought joy to everyone and was an endless source of inspiration.

The Portuguese Football Federation would like to express its deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and André, as well as to Liverpool FC and Penafiel FC, the clubs to which the players were attached.
We have lost two champions. Their departure is an irreplaceable loss for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to something that can be done every day to honor the legacy they left behind.”

On their official website, Liverpool FC also released a statement:
“Liverpool FC has been informed that Diogo Jota, 28, has died following a car crash in Spain, along with his brother Andre.

Liverpool FC will not be making any further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff be respected as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss.
